FAQs for Students

Lecture recording frequently asked questions for students:

Why are my lectures being recorded?

We encourage lecturers to record teaching sessions and make them available to you so that you can rewatch them in your own study time. Being able to revisit lectures multiple times, as well as pausing and rewinding will hopefully be useful for you and your classmates, especially those who, for example, have a hearing impairment, speak English as a second language, or have learning difficulties.

Who has access to the recordings?

Recordings will be made available to those students who attended or would be expected to attend each lecture, i.e. those on the same course/module as you. They will be also be available to course staff.

We might sometimes share recordings with student from different cohorts from you, however this will only be done where there is no student input in the recording.

Please see the Lecture Recording privacy notice for more details.

Does this mean I don’t need to attend lectures?

No, you are still expected to attend lectures in accordance with the Student Attendance Policy, and your attendance will continue be monitored. Not all parts of all lectures will be recorded, so it is important you attend so that you can fully participate in each session.

Don’t you need my consent to video me?

No, the University does not rely on consent as its UK GDPR lawful basis for using your personal information. Please see the Lecture Recording privacy notice for more information on this.

What if I don’t want to be recorded?

The focus of the recordings is on the lecture itself and not on you as students. We can’t always completely avoid capturing student images or voices, however lecturers will let you know when recording is and isn’t taking place so that you are aware. They should be able to tell you the best places to sit to avoid appearing in the recording, and can pause the video when there is going to be lots of student participation or activities that would be inappropriate to record.

If you have specific concerns, you should discuss these with your lecturer so that they are aware and can make any necessary adjustments to allow you to fully participate in each session without being recorded.

If something has been recorded that you are not comfortable with, you can ask your lecturer to edit it out of the footage. However, if this would involve removing key parts of the lecture that other students are relying on, we may be unable to edit this out. We would therefore encourage you to be mindful of what you share when recording is taking place, as we can’t always guarantee that it can be removed from the recording.

Can I share the videos with other people?

The lecture recordings are for you and your classmates to help you learn and revise. They must not be used for any other purpose, and should not be shared with or viewed by anyone other than the students on your course. This includes clips or still images taken from the footage.

These recordings will contain the personal information of your lecturers and of other students, so sharing them with other people would be considered a personal data breach under the UK GDPR. Any student deliberately misusing or inappropriately sharing the information in these recordings will be dealt with under the Student Behaviour and Disciplinary Procedures

For absolute clarity, the following would all be considered misconduct under these procedures:

  • Sharing videos, clips, or still images from the recordings via social media, video hosting sites (e.g. YouTube), messaging apps (e.g. WhatsApp), or any other online platform/app.
  • Allowing other people (other than the other students on your course) to view recordings on your device
  • Using software to edit or alter footage (e.g. Deepfake, AI) for entertainment or any other purpose.
  • Using recordings to bully, harass, intimidate, or discriminate against students or staff.

Please let us know if you think a lecture recording has been used or shared inappropriately.

Can I make my own recording of lectures?

Some students with disabilities may still need to record lectures using their own devices as part of a reasonable adjustment agreed with the University. These recordings must be used for personal study only, and the previous section about sharing footage will still apply.
